DisplayLink commits $100M to UK research and development

CAMBRIDGE, UK, — April 4th, 2019 — DisplayLink®, the leading provider of USB graphics and wireless virtual reality technology, today announced a significant commitment to a new 60,000 sq ft engineering design centre on the Cambridge Science Park to accommodate up to 500 employees, primarily engaged in integrated circuit and software development, as well as other corporate functions. The facility will be ready for occupation later this year.

Founded in 2003, DisplayLink now has more than 300 employees in Cambridge, UK, and across other offices in California, Poland, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea. The company has grown to annual sales of over $100M, reinvesting 25% of revenues in an ambitious R&D program, with 70% of its employees in engineering functions. Its customers include HP, Dell, Lenovo, Targus, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, HTC, ASUS, Logitech, Kensington, and other computer and consumer electronics companies. DisplayLink chips are used in products deployed by enterprises globally, including applications in hot-desking, meeting rooms, and point of sale. Most recently, it delivered a wireless virtual reality solution for the market-leading HTC Vive Pro headset, and a wireless gaming adaptor for high-end Android smartphones in partnership with ASUS.

"We’re excited to commit to an ambitious R&D program in Cambridge, a location that holds a wealth of talent in the specialist engineering fields we need to access in order to compete with much larger global semiconductor companies", said Graham O’Keeffe, Executive Chairman. "Successive generations of integrated circuits add new layers of functionality and complexity. We have been fortunate to attract some of Europe’s most capable chip designers and software engineers to join our teams in the UK and Poland to solve complex system-level design challenges. I am particularly proud of the graduate training program that we started this year at each of our R&D centres, enabling us to bring in a new generation of talented engineers into our organization. Over the next 5 years we plan to spend over $100M on technology development in the UK, with a goal of operating from world-class facilities in Cambridge and elsewhere to accelerate the pace of our new product delivery."
