Linux can provide a zero client environment that enables each student to have their own computer station at a very low cost. Userful MultiSeat Linux 2011 is software provided by Userful that turns 1 Linux computer into 10 high performance independent computer stations. It enables schools to quickly deploy large numbers of computer stations for a low cost, whether in the classroom, computer lab, or school library. It is easy to set up, use and maintain, and provides teachers with the tools they need to give their students a high quality computer-based education. The Linux operating system, and open source application software, provide free, secure, and customizable alternatives to the Windows operating system, and proprietary application software. Virtually every Windows application has a free equivalent for Linux.
Setting up Userful MultiSeat is plug-and-play using standard USB zero clients from DisplayLink. Just install the Linux-based multiseat software from Userful, and add monitors, keyboards and mice. Multiple students can then open the same application at the same time, or different applications at the same time, without any problems - each with their own monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
