Multi-Monitor FAQs

What is DisplayLink technology?
DisplayLink lets you quickly and easily connect multiple monitors to your PC with a simple USB connection.

Why do I need a second monitor for my PC?
You’d be amazed at how much it simplifies your computing experience. It helps you organize your workspace and do more things at one time.

What do I need to add more monitors to my PC?
There are three ways to expand your view with DisplayLink technology:

1. USB Monitors: for an all-in-one solution, a USB monitor is the easiest way to add an additional monitor to your PC in one product. Just plug in the USB monitor into any available USB port and you’re ready to enjoy the productivity benefits of multiple montiors.

2. USB Graphics Adapters: if you already have an extra monitor collecting dust then you can put it to use with a USB graphics adapter. Simply connect the DVI/VGA connector of your existing monitor to the adapter, plug the USB cable into the adapter, and connect the USB cable to your computer. You will need one adapter for each additional monitor you wish to connect to your computer allowing you up to six USB displays – in addition to any you may already have!

3. USB Docking Station: laptop users may want the extra features available in a USB docking station. In addition to USB graphics, USB docking stations include an extra array of peripherals that allow you to plug in your mouse, keyboard, printer, iPod, spakers, microphone, and just about any other USB device – including additional USB graphics adapters for even more screen space! All of this can be connected by just one USB cable to your notebook, making docking and undocking easy.

These USB graphics products are available from many major brands and can be found in the DisplayLink shop.

But I don’t do that many things at one time on my PC…
Again, you’d be surprised. If you’ve ever interrupted a photo slideshow to answer an email, or downloaded some software while creating a music playlist, you too qualify as a multitasker. That’s what today’s PCs are designed for, but most people continue to work with clumsy “mono-tasking” display technology.

Well, they probably don’t want to spend a lot of money…
And now they don’t have to! That’s the best thing about DisplayLink. It’s a simple USB-based device that makes the convenience of multimonitor computing affordable for anyone. Buying a second monitor has never been cheaper, and if you’re like some folks, you might even have an extra monitor around that you’re not even using.

I use PCs and notebooks for my business. Is DisplayLink a good investment?
Absolutely. Studies conducted on multimonitor computing have reported productivity gains of 9 to 42 percent. Compared to single-monitor users, dual-monitor users performed more work in less time with fewer errors. Simply put, people are able to work more efficiently, and accurately, when they have more information in view.

How many USB monitors can be supported by a single PC?
A typical PC can run up to six monitors. The exact number depends on the type of content being displayed.

Can I watch DVD movies using DisplayLink?
Sure! DisplayLink technology delivers full-screen DVD playback over USB 2.0.

Does it work with Macintosh?
Yes. A beta driver for Apple Macintosh computers with Intel processors is available now at the DisplayLink Mac OS X Beta Driver site.

Is DisplayLink’s video technology suitable for gaming?
While DisplayLink technology is targeted primarily to productivity and video applications, it is suitable for the casual gamer. If you’re a "power gamer" to whom money is no object, you might want to go another route.

Is it hard to set up?
It’s a breeze. Just install the DisplayLink software and connect a USB cable between the monitor and your PC. DisplayLink’s software automatically configures the monitor for optimal picture quality and stores those settings.
